Three person were killed and 16 others wounded when gunmen invaded a church in Maiakworigold Maikatako village in Nigeria's central Plateau state on New Year's eve, the local Punch newspaper reported Thursday.
According to the paper, the gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, stormed the church during the watch-night service to usher in the new year, and started shooting sporadically, forcing people to flee in different directions.
While two of those killed were shot dead in the church, the third one was killed near the church by the retreating gunmen.
The state has witnessed recurring cases of ethno-religious violence pitching the indigenous people, mostly Christian farmers, against those referred to 'settlers' who are mostly Muslim Hausa/Fulani herdsmen.
It is generally believed that the contest for land is one of the main causes of the routine clashes that have left thousands dead over the years.
