Nigeria Wealth Fund Gets $550 Million to Support Power Market

Nigeria provided $550 million to its Sovereign Wealth Fund to help guarantee power trading and spur investments to build the country’s electricity market, Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said.
Out of the fund, $350 million will be used as “liquidity facility” for the state-owned electricity trader, which guarantees power sales by producers to distribution companies, Okonjo-Iweala told reporters today in the capital, Abuja. The remaining $200 million “will be for the infrastructure fund for gas-to-power investments.”
President Goodluck Jonathan in September handed control of 15 power generation and distribution companies spun out of the former state-owned power utility to new owners to boost output and end blackouts in the country, where demand is almost double the 4-gigawatt capacity. They include Transnational Corp. of Nigeria Plc and Siemens AG. (SIE) Nigeria still needs $14.2 billion annually to bridge its infrastructure gap, Okonjo-Iweala said.

Italian Navy Rescues More Than 1,000 African Immigrants at Sea

marinamilitare

The Italian navy said on Thursday that it had rescued more than 1,100 immigrants who were attempting to reach the country by crossing the Mediterranean Sea on small boats. Italy is a hub for immigrants looking to get to Europe and, according to Reuters, “sea arrivals more than tripled in 2013 from the previous year, fuelled by Syria's civil war and strife in the Horn of Africa.” The Italian navy estimates that some 3,000 people are making the dangerous journey to Europe via Italy each month. The latest rescue effort, included four pregnant women and 50 children, according to the navy.
Hundreds of immigrants drowned in shipwrecks in October of last year and to prevent further deaths the Italian government has been more aggressive in identifying and intercepting the small, overcrowded vessels before they run into trouble at sea. The migrants will have the opportunity to claim asylum after they arrive in Italy. “They have to satisfy the authorities that they are fleeing persecution and would face harm or even death if sent back to their country of origin,” according to the BBC. “Nearly three out of four asylum applications in EU states were rejected in 2012.”

Masquerades storm school in Osun

THE unending crisis dogging the introduction of the same uniform for students of public schools in Osun State by the Governor Rauf Aregbesola-led administration took a new turn on Wednesday, as some students of Baptist High School, Iwo, mobilised masquerades to their school premises, in a protest.
Nigerian Tribune reliably gathered that some students of the school also adorned themselves in masquerades’ regalia, a development that halted academic activities in the school for several hours.
Credible sources informed the Nigerian Tribune that traditionalists, in collaboration with some students, arranged for masquerades to invade the school, in a bid to champion the cause of the traditional worshippers in the ensuing saga over the introduction of same uniform in schools.
It will be recalled that the same students of the school had caused stir on Tuesday, when majority of them came to the assembly ground in hijab, cassocks, choir robes and traditional veil.
The state government had, last year, introduced same uniform for all public school in the state, as part of the resolve to kick-start reclassification of schools.
As a result of the development, the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Osun Baptist Convention had registered their displeasure against the decision.
Before the latest development, pockets of crises had been recorded at the school over the use of hijab by female Muslim students school.
Security personnel were said to have been deployed in the school on Wednesday to prevent breakdown of law and order, just as officials of the state Ministry of Education were sighted in the school, exploring measures to address the crisis.
Commenting on the  development, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Sunday Akere, said the state government had been briefed about the crisis, assuring that efforts were ongoing to tackle it, with a view to restoring sanity back into the system.

Lancashire boy, 13, raped sister, 8, after watching porn on Xbox

A girl was raped by her brother who had viewed X-rated material on his Xbox. Picture: Thinkstock

A TEENAGE boy admitted raping his little sister after watching porn on his Xbox and wanting to "try out" what he saw.
The schoolboy, 13, told Lancashire police he had been watching X-rated material on the games console and chose his sister because "she was small and wouldn't remember stuff".
The boy, who appeared before Blackburn Magistrates Court yesterday, pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting his eight-year-old sister and inciting her to perform a sexual act on him.
He has been bailed to live with other relatives while his sister is being supported by specialist officers, The Lancashire Telegraph reported.
A pre-sentence report is being prepared by the youth offending team.
Jon Brown from British children's protection charity NSPCC told the paper it was clear that pornography could warp childrens' perception of normal sexual behaviour.
"This is a horrific and tragic case which must have caused tremendous heartache for the family," he said.
"We know that the vast amount of inappropriate, unrealistic and sometimes downright harmful pornography some children are exposed to through the internet can be extremely damaging to young minds."
It comes as a government committee is set to discuss a new online safety bill which proposes that internet users must opt in and prove they are over 18 to view adult content.
Xbox users can currently customise their access to various content, including games and TV content.
Parents can also block access to the internet and change the online safety and privacy settings for their Xbox accounts.

African Pop Star Dencia Defends Whitenicious Skin-Care Line

Be for or against Cameroonian pop star Dencia’s Whitenicious skin-care line, she’s taken to Ebony magazine to set the record straight.
The Black community has reacted unfavorably to one of the most awfully titled skin care lines ever.
Dencia chatted in-depth with the publication about her product line and to comment on reports of skin bleaching. Selling it to consumers at $50-$150 per bottle, Dencia champions her product as a “treatment for dark spots,” and claims it is a best seller.
Dr. Yaba Blay, a professor, producer, and publisher, handles the conversation where Dencia defends against critics. “I’m trying to build,” the pop star said. Labeled in the press as “skin toning,” as it is regarded in Nigeria, the World Health Organization notes that nearly 77 percent of Nigerian women are using this process regularly to change their appearance.
In addition to causing skin burns, rashes, and permanent disfigurations, many creams contain a harmful amount of mercury and can cause cancer of the liver and kidneys. Despite this, Dencia believes that people really want to buy it.
She may be right as nearly 40 percent of women in China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and the Republic of Korea admit to bleaching.

Nigerian Media announce "Death" of wrong Nollywood actress

anjie

Yesterday, a media mix-up resulted in the “death” of popular Nigerian actress, Angelina Okorie. As it turns out, a Nollywood actress did die, but it just wasn’t Angelina Okorie.

The news report spread yesterday that Angelina Okorie had died during childbirth yesterday, and affected fans had already begun mourning. It was revealed, however, that Angelina Okorie is alive and well and that the person who died was another Nollywood actress called Ijeoma Okori.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Rivers State Chapter released a statement to confirm as much, saying that it “regrets to announce the painful loss of our member, Mrs. Ijeoma Okori of Eleme Satellite, who died during child delivery, this morning (Sunday). It pains more to know that our Comrade died alongside her twin baby.”

Somewhere along the pipeline, information got warped, we expect, and the news got jumbled.

Angelina Okorie has since then dispelled the rumors of death through a post on Facebook: “I am not dead, I’m balling hard. As a matter of fact, 150 years have been added to my age, I bear the mark of Jesus Christ. RIP to all the people who used my photo on their blogs, newspapers, and dps, saying I, Angela Okorie is dead. I’m still the unstoppable moving Train. My God is alive. He alone can take my life. “

Why I turned down Nollywood roles- Nigerian Hollywood actor, Hakeem Kae-Kazim

Actor reveals why he rejects some Nollywood scripts
Hollywood actor, Hakeem Kae Kazim, has revealed that he turned down several Nollywood scripts as such scripts did not match his standard.
In an interview with HipHopWorld, the British-Nigerian, who played George Rutaganda in the Academy Award-nominated movie, Hotel Rwanda, also disclosed how director, Obi Emelonye, wooed him over to Nollywood with the script of Last Flight To Abuja.
“I did the TV series called 24, up in Los Angeles, United States, then one Nigerian director I had met at some film festivals said to me, ‘Nobody knows you are Nigerian in Nigeria’.
“I was shocked and he said, ‘You have to come home and do something’. Then a year and a half later, he presented a script, Inale. It was my first experience coming back into Nigeria and working in Nollywood. And then he said will I come and do his movie; it was Last Flight To Abuja. Again, the reason why I did it was because he was the director and one that is trying to move the Nollywood film experience to a higher level so I wanted to help him do that and so I came back and did Last Flight To Abuja, which was an interesting filming experience,” Mr. Kae-Kazim said.
He also noted the discrimination of black actors in Hollywood.
“Yes, there is discrimination in one sort of sense but the major fact is that in Hollywood, whites are the majority there. They are doing their own work and are just telling their own stories from their perspective and most times they just have a person of colour they want to put in as they deem fit. And I think it’s up to us to be able to tell our own stories. The most important thing is for the African race both in Hollywood and Nollywood to put together their resources to provide infrastructure and to start a process of telling their own stories so that the stories come from them and by them,” he said.
Mr. Kae-Kazim described his experience with Nollywood superstars, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and Genevieve Nnaji, as good. He talked about how great it was for him to have come and experienced some of Nigerian talents and hopefully influence the talent and help raise everybody’s game.

We get mad at each other 10 times a day’- Olu and Joke Jacobs

Mr. Olu Jacobs and his wife, Joke, are top artistes. Inside their home, it is not all the time a bed of roses. They share their happy and challenging times in this piece.
Appreciating marriage
Marriage has been good, it has been wonderful.
How I met my husband
I met him at the National Theatre while we were rehearsing for Jero’s Metamorphosis by Professor Wole Soyinka in 1981. I was to play Sister Rubeka and he was playing the role of Prophet Jero and, at the same time co-directing the play. That was where we met.
What happened when I met him
People had been talking about him before I arrived the country because he was based in the UK at that time. Everybody was talking about him, especially Miss Ene, the then Artistic Director of the National Theatre and Dr. Ashiwaju. They had met in England and I guess he would have been the Chiwetel Ejiofor of that time. Just as what Chiwetel is to this present generation, so he was then.
He was one of the top African actors in England at that time, whether on stage or on screen. He was the talk of the town. So, I was looking forward to meeting him; when I finally saw him, he was quite a handsome man. Our first meeting, if I could remember vividly, I went to call Miss Ene to come and watch our rehearsal. They were in a production meeting, and, when I entered the office, the first thing he uttered was, “This is the woman I am going to marry.”
When I left the office, I said to myself, `How can anybody say it just like that?’ He always insisted that I eyed him every now and then. We started out as very good friends. Four years later we got married. We met in 1981 and married in 1985.
Courtship before marriage
We started courting before he proposed to me. But the proposal came after four years of our courtship. He proposed to me in Tunisia while he was on a movie set called, ‘The Pirate’, directed by Roman Polansky. I was in a drama school in London. So, I visited him briefly in Tunisia to spend some time with him, and later flew back to England. We have been married for 28 years now.
Attraction
He had a lovely sense of humour. He was also very passionate about his work. Additionally, he had a very broad shoulder and a very lean body like that of our last child. Basically, the attraction was his sense of fun and style. He really had, and still has a sense of style. You can never find Olu dressed shabbily, it’s not him. I remember the early years of our marriage, after 1993, things got rough with us, after pumping all our money into an investment.
We used to work ourselves to the bone. And it used to upset us that we couldn’t dress the way we liked to. But there were responsibilities to take care of. That was an attraction as well; his sense of style, honesty and high integrity.
What kept marriage going
Friendship. We are each other’s very close friend. It’s not as if we don’t have close friends outside our marriage, but I think we are both each other’s number one close friend. The other thing is mutual respect, the fact that we both share the same passion about the area of entertainment that we are in. Of course, the various challenges that we’ve faced over the years , we’ve learnt how to surmount them together. At different times when it is necessary, we have both learnt to forgive each other. I guess the sum total of what I’m saying is that God’s grace has been present in our marriage.
People always refer to your marriage as a successful celebrity marriage. What is the secret of being able to hold on to your marriage for 28 years and you remain inseparable?
God’s grace has kept us in the sense that even when the challenges come, we’ve been very lucky with the kind of friends that we have had who have been very supportive. They too have their share in making sure that this marriage succeeds. I have some very good friends and family, definitely good family on both sides.
Key factor for successful marriage
There has been the contribution of family and friends. We don’t have that many friends really, but the ones we have are like family, they are very close to us. They’ve been with us from day one. Our families too have been very supportive, especially, when the children were younger and we had to work. It was easy to take the children to family members while we went about what it was necessary for us to do , knowing fully well that the children were in good hands.
Also we had very challenging times,; I’ll never forget a time, I don’t even know what it was that caused the quarrel, it was a long time ago, and I got so upset. I just packed all my things, took the children with me in the car and drove off and went to my mum. That same day, I came back, my mother drove me back. (laughs). They are both so close, my husband and my mum.
A lot of times when people see the two of them together, they think she is his mother. Unfortunately, by the time we got married, his mum had passed away, so his late sister was like my mother-in-law. And she was just an absolute gem, she used to call me ‘Olori’ which means ‘Queen’. She had this wonderful way of making me feel extra-special. My sister-in-law never allowed anyone to oppress me. Our families are always so positive, so encouraging….. One good thing about both families is that whenever there is a need, everybody rises. That’s how we are.
Causes of break-up of marriages
I wouldn’t dare say that I can talk about that, I can’t; because I know that what I have is God’s grace. It would be arrogant to say this is what caused the break up of this person’s marriage. I’m not walking in their shoes. All I can say is that there are things that happen that can break up marriages, but if you can pray for strength to weather those storms and usually when these storms are happening, it’s because there is something good, there is a contention. Marriage is an institution created by God .
As a Christian, I look at it from the Christian perspective. It is a symbol of God’s union with his Church. Marriage is always on the attack; if you remember, even in the Garden of Eden when Eve was found on her own, she was attacked and, when she succumbed, it was easy for Adam to fall. If you can ask for the grace to weather the storm, there’s always something beautiful at the end.
If you’re being physically or mentally abused in a marriage, to be honest, for me, I’d go for separation. Then, we go for counselling and see if the union can continue. With a lot of prayers, it usually does come together. But for me to say this is why marriages break up, I can’t.
Intimacy in marriage
I don’t think it’s possible for you to have marriage without intimacy, because if there’s no intimacy, why bother with marriage? Most people think intimacy means just sex, there’s more to it than that. There’s a meeting of minds, there’s that bonding. Sometime ago, I used to tell him (my husband) that ‘one of the reasons why I find that I can’t leave you is that the next morning, I’m likely to call to find out how you are’.
There is just this closeness. I really don’t think marriage is possible without intimacy. I think it is very important that there is trust in marriage. Trust can be broken, but it can be healed. Some people believe in polygamy, I don’t. I don’t believe in sharing. It has to do with what works for you as a couple.
Display of public affection
I don’t think I’d do what I see happens in the West where you see people kissing on the streets. But, yes I can hold my husband, hug him if the situation calls for it.
Combining my duty as a mother, wife and an actress
One, I have had very good role models. I think that’s a key and my first role model was my mum. She was married to the same person all her life, until my father died. That’s over 40 something years of marriage they had. The people who were also my care givers because my mum travelled a lot, like Chief Mrs Olaoye, Mrs Oyin Oladapo, Mrs Laoye and my mother’s sister, Mrs Busola Olumide – all these people juggled being wives, being mothers, being professionals.
One of the things I learnt is to make time for the family, you career cannot supersede the family. The family always comes first in everything I’m doing. There is what is called prioritising, what needs attention at a particular point. Is it work, family or your husband. They rarely do need attention at the same time, thank God, so you give attention to whatever needs attention at whatever point in time.
There’s one thing I learnt from my mum which is to always have very good back up; your house helps and family members, especially when the children are very young and you are a working class lady. I also learnt that changing house helps is not the best thing to do. When someone becomes your house help, she automatically becomes part of your family. Their problems become yours as well.
You operate as one family, that’s the way I’ve been brought up. And because of that, you are able to function well as a family. My house help has been with us for over 14 years now. I used to have challenges with my drivers, I kept changing them. I had to go to God in prayer asking for a a good driver and the present one has been with us for over five years.
What is it you don’t like about your husband
Of course, we get mad at each other ten times a day.( Laughs). Earlier in our marriage, when we used to snap at each other, it led to sulking on both sides for hours. But now, there is nothing like that any more. We can get mad at each other and the next two minutes we are laughing and talking to each other. If we quarrel and it lasts for a couple of hours, it’s because we want to drive a point home.
There is a beautiful way an actress put it. She said, and I quote, “Within the marriage, there are lots of weddings and divorces, but what is important is that the weddings should be more than the divorces and then you have a successful marriage.”
I saw someone who stunned me – Olu Jacobs
Before I met my wife
I was a bachelor. I was living on my own for so many years. I went to England as a bachelor and when I met my wife I was still a bachelor. Yes, I had some girl friends but not more than one at a time before I met my wife. Unfortunately, they lacked the qualities I wanted in a woman at that time. It was quite easy for me when I met my wife to do away with any other casual friend that I had then.
I closed all chapters with them just to make sure that there was no misunderstanding between my wife and myself. I wanted to give the relationship I had with her a chance to grow so that interferences would be eliminated.
Love at first sight
Yes, it was the case of love at first sight. Our story runs like a novel. We were doing a production meeting for Jero’s Metamorphosis at National Theatre, Iganmu. I was playing Brother Jero and, at the same time, co-directing the play. Suddenly, the door opened and the lady came in, I looked at her and said, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the woman I am going to marry’. She just looked at me up and down and left.
Four years later, we got married. That was how sure I was when I saw her and I have never been that kind of sure in my life. I’m not an extrovert when it comes to that. I keep my relationship quiet. But that was how I saw it at the moment when I saw her.
Attraction
I saw a woman, somebody who stunned me. There was no explanation, I looked at her and she was just the kind of woman I wanted. I saw her and she was just it and I said, ‘This is the lady I ‘m going to marry.’ After that time, I didn’t see any other girl friend apart from her. And since we got married, it has been same.
The journey 28 years after
We thank God for everything. Like any other journey in life, whether by road, sea or air, you must go through turbulent times as well as smooth times. That is part of life, and that is why it is important that when you decide to marry, you must begin to think of how you are going to take care of that person. How is that person going to care of you? What kind of person do you want? All these questions you must sincerely and honestly ask yourself.
When you begin to think for two, when you are working you are working, for two in your mind. Whatever you are doing from then on, you are doing it for two. That’s what God wants. He wants unity, He wants the husband and wife to be united. When you are thinking, you are only thinking of your partner who happens to be your best friend. Both of you have to share your plans.
If you are doing something and your wife doesn’t know and if your wife is doing something and you don’t know, it means the relationship hasn’t started yet. If you are keeping money away to spend on other babes, God doesn’t support that, it is the devil that is diving in to divide the relationship and that’s what we must always avoid.
Is there anything you don’t like about your wife?
She used to keep things in mind, I never realised this on time. When you think everything has been forgotten, all of a sudden she reminds you of it. At first, I used to be very upset, and then I realised that I used to be like that. Memory is good, but at the same time, we must make sure that we use it for good. Instead of looking for something bad that she has done, use that same time to look for something good that she has done, then you’ll find that she has not done anything bad, when you compare both. But we exaggerate what we consider bad.
The challenges are challenges and they must come in life. It is very easy to talk about the bad things but the good things are the ones that inspire. The bad things should be remembered in order to warn you to change for the better. Use them for change. My wife is very generous, very kind and caring. If you’re having a problem, she’ll listen and take it up as her own. If you need something and she has it, she’ll give it to you.
I’m very happy with her and she’s my best friend. When you have a friend at home, you want to go home. Wherever you are, you want to finish whatever you are doing and go home. The home is attractive to you and that’s the kind of person she is. Sometimes, when we are working separately, we try to always be on phone with each other two to three times a day. If it is possible on our way to branch and say ‘hi’, have a cup of tea together which we do sometimes and spend the night. Then the next day, she’s off to her station and I’m off to mine. We keep in touch.
Have you starred in the same movie with your wife? What was the experience like?
Yes, we work very well together. We don’t have problems at all. When we met, we were working together. There were no unnecessary complications. Work is work and play is play. We left our homes so that we can work.
If you are to advise young couples, what would you tell them?
First of all, young people must try as much as possible to avoid too many so-called good friends who always have advice for you. Try and be careful with them. You may listen to them, but weigh whatever they give you. Not all your so-called good friends wish you well. Quite a lot of them want to take over your position. Pray for contentment.
Pray to meet, have and keep your friend. You need the wisdom to see and recognise a friend. Always think for two ( you and your wife). You and your wife first, others can come in later. Even your parents will tell you, “This is your wife, take care of her”.

Rent a crowd: Ghanaians mobilise South Africans against Nigeria

MY enemy’s enemy is my friend seems to be Ghana’s approach as they mobilise support for their team ahead of the semi-final game against Nigeria Wednesday.
The Ghanaians saw how Nigerians outnumbered Morocco five to one when the Super Eagles defeated the Atlas Lions at the quarter-final stage of the on-going African Nations Championship (CHAN) and do not want to suffer such fate.
‘‘What they are doing is to play on South Africans’ sensibilities following Nigeria’s dominance of games against the Bafana Bafana,’’ a Nigerian resident in Bloemfontein, Emeka Okafor, told The Guardian.
‘‘They have approached some Nigerians, who they thought were South Africans, offering them their shirts in return for support.
“This approach smacks of desperation because this is one of the towns with a large Nigerian population and nothing the Ghanaians can do will give them more support when we clash with them today,” he added.
Many Nigerians from different parts of South Africa have trooped into Bloemfontein ahead of today’s game, just as members of the Nigerian Supporters Club have turned the city into one huge party town.
The Guardian learnt that the Supporters Club, led by Rafiu Ladipo, were expected to meet with leaders of the Nigerian community in Bloemfontein yesterday to plan their support for the Super Eagles today.
Meanwhile, Ghana Coach, Maxwell Konadu, has lauded the mentality of defender, Kwabena Adusei, after the centre-back played through the pain barrier in their quarter-final win.
Adusei scored a 67th minute penalty but was withdrawn shortly after that due to injury.
The Asante Kotoko player picked up the injury before he elected himself to convert the spot-kick, which ensured Ghana eliminated DR Congo 1-0.
“Kwabena Adusei complained two days ago of a groin injury, but it was treated and during the game against DR Congo he approached me with tears in his eyes that he needed to be replaced because the injury had been aggravated in the game,” Konadu said on Monday.
“But I told him to stay on for the next five minutes, because there was the need for someone to warm-up and he agreed to do so. It was during this period that the penalty came and once again he mustered courage to go for the kick, which sent Ghana into the semi-finals.
“If it were any other player who was going through such pains the he wouldn’t have stayed on, let alone taking a crucial penalty for his side, so he needs to be commended for such high level of mental toughness.”
Adusei has been cleared and should be fit to start against Nigeria.

I’m Going Into Farming —D’Banj

Nigeria’s pop music star, D’Banj, has said that he is considering delving into full scale farming to help fight poverty and encourage many African youths to embrace agriculture as a means of livelihood.
He was also made the organisation’s face of 2014 Year of Agriculture Campaign as declared by the Africa Union.
“As a face of the ONE Organisation’s initiative to drive full participation in agriculture, I have to live by example. I am going to engage in agriculture personally to encourage millions of African youths who look up to me as a role model. I need to let them know that unlike the old stereotype of farming which was considered a punishment, modern farming on the contrary,  is a cool source of employment for many graduates,” said D’Banj.
According to him, there should be a change where many youths are expected to embrace agriculture and see it as a potentially high-yielding venture to tackle hunger and poverty on the continent.
“Agriculture is life and it is everything that we live for. It is the only way forward for us in Africa. There are many potentials we are missing out and if we could focus on it, the continent can actually feed the rest of the world,” he said.
D’Banj noted that he once tried in his own little way to tackle hunger by going into Koko Gari project not really on a large scale. But now that he is working with ONE Organisation and has been exposed to the potentials in agriculture, he is ready to get involved deeply.
Also speaking at the launch of the campaign, Camerounian-born Nde Ndifonka, Media Manager, Africa, ONE Organisation, said the organisation is keen on pushing the continent’s leaders to stop paying lip service to the funding of agriculture.
He noted that after 10 years of AU’s affirmation that African countries should devote at least 10 percent of the annual budget to agriculture, only three countries-Ghana, Burkina Faso and Benin have met the target.
Ndifonka said there should be change in paradigm and ONE is championing a petition to force the leaders to increase their funding and help tackle poverty and hunger on the continent.
He disclosed that D’Banj will lead the campaign, sign the petition and get other celebrities across Africa to sign for onward delivery to the leaders at their AU Summit coming up in June.

DDC machines contract: Court awards N17.3bn cost against INEC, Jega

INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega

An Abuja Federal High Court on Tuesday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to pay N17.3bn as damages to a local manufacturer, Beddings Holdings Limited, over the N34.5bn contract the commission awarded in 2010 for the purchase of Direct Data Capturing machines used for the voters’ registration exercise.
The N17.3bn is 50 per cent of the total sum of the contract, which INEC awarded to three firms – Haier Electrical Appliances Corporation Limited, Zinox Technologies Limited and Avante International Technology Incorporated.
The court presided over by Justice Ibrahim Auta, ordered the payment while delivering judgment in a suit brought by Beddings Holdings Limited against INEC, its chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega; the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and the three firms which benefited from the N34.5bn DDC machines procurement contract.
Justice Auta held that INEC was aware of the fact that the plaintiff, BHL, had a valid and subsisting patent right over the DDC machines but went ahead to award a contract for the purchase of the equipment without first seeking, and obtaining the permission of the right holder (BHL).
In the suit filed by its lawyer, Mr. John Okoriko, BHL had accused INEC and Jega of infringing on its  patent right by awarding contracts for the purchase and deployment of the DDC machines for the compilation of the voters register without its consent.
In his judgment, Justice Auta held that the country’s Patent and Design Act outlawed the use of a patented invention without the consent of the patent holder.
The judge stressed that INEC and other agencies of the government, were not above the law.
He said, “INEC, like every other government agency has the responsibility of obeying the law of the land.
“INEC as an electoral body should realise that the business of election is important. It touches on the life of the nation.
“So, INEC should always play by the rules, so that its conduct does not affect the outcome of elections.”
“The defendant (INEC) by the award of contract to other suppliers without getting the permission of the patent rights holder has breached his right.”
